Award Recipients
Meet our award recipients for the 2016-17 application period.
Emeline Boehringer
2016-17 Grace Erline Memorial
Girls Gone Great Scholarship Recipient
Emeline, a senior at the Baltimore School for the Arts, is a founding member of Beast Grrl Collective, "a youth-run feminist organization interested in promoting youth empowerment, feminist education, and art activism." Emeline wowed us with her passion to amplify young women's voices through writing, art, and activism.
"In the future, I hope to find a way to synthesize my interests in art, biophysics, and activism. As a student at the Baltimore School for the Arts, I spend half of my day creating visual art. I have also spent time during my high school career as an intern in the Biophysics Department at Johns Hopkins University. I want to combine these interests with my passion for activism in college and in my future career."
Haley Parsley
2016-17 Grace Erline Memorial
Girls Gone Great Scholarship Recipient
Haley, a senior at the Baltimore School for the Arts, is also a founding member of Beast Grrl Collective. Haley wrote about their effort to lead their classmates at BSA to collect donations of tampons, pads, and other period-care products to give to homeless shelters. We were impressed by her compassion for the community, and her belief that all of her classmates, not just other young women, could be inspired to help.
"After college, I plan to enter the Peace Corps, hopefully in a Spanish speaking country. Spanish and service are both passions of mine. I would also be interested in working for Outward Bound as a group leader. I attended two Outward Bound Scholarship programs in high school, and both were transformative for me, fostering leadership skills and self confidence. This experience is something that I look forward to sharing with young people! Finally, I want to pursue a career in advocacy, working to advance the rights of girls and women."
Madison Tewey
2016-17 Grace Erline Memorial
Live An Amazing Life Grant Recipient
Madison, a senior at Notre Dame Preparatory School, submitted an organized, well-planned proposal for a trip to volunteer at the Sloth Sanctuary in Costa Rica. While there, Madison will also conduct research about important social, economic, and political issues that impact the environment in Costa Rica. She will create a series of video blogs about her travels and research findings.
"After this adventure, I plan to continue working in the fields of Environmental Science and Marine Biology. I would like to do more research projects like these, bringing attention to issues like the overuse of monoculture and learning new information about the world around us. I will use skills I gain through this research trip, such as organizing research procedure and communicating findings to a larger audience, to assist me in my future career path."
